Description:
TOUR: Archeology & Artists in Atzompa
THURSDAY, JANUARY 18 / 9 AM-4 PM
The archeological ruins at Atzompa lay quietly unexplored for centuries in the shadow of Monte Alban. It was only in 2007 that a concerted effort was made to unearth and understand the complex of buildings that sit atop the hill overlooking the nearby town. The site was opened to the public in December of 2012. Now visitors are welcome to wander the ruins and visit the new museum, imagining the activity that was commonplace there at the height of the Zapotec empire. Caution: you can expect to walk about 1.5 miles in the archeological zone, scrambling up rocky footpaths and climbing numerous steps. Sturdy footwear is recommended.
After our visit to the ruins we will stop at the nearby home and studio of ceramic sculptor Angélica Vásquez, then travel to the workshop of the famed local potter, Vicente Hernandez, to admire their creative handiwork. We will finish with a delicious lunch at either the Mia Arroz Thai restaurant or the Hacienda Santa Marta buffet restaurant. (Note: tour price does not include lunch, which likely will cost 150-200 pesos.)

Payment either at the OLL front desk or on the OLL Event page https://www.oaxlibrary.org/online-store. Members: 350 pesos Non-members: 400 pesos
Early registration advised.
