The title of this talk is self explanatory. Dr. Luis Rey Matias-Cruz is a Zapotec intellectual from the Sierra Norte in Oaxaca. A graduate of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) in Mexico City, Ohio University in Athens Ohio, and Free University in the Netherlands. He was recogized as the first Ph.D graduate in the Netherlands who was a member of an Indigenous Peoples of the Americas. Dr. Rey has taught at various universities in the United States and is currently a professor of Culture and Sustainable Development at the Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez de Oaxaca.

Last year Rey's talk at OLL was based on his book, Repression and Rebellions in Southern Mexico. It was one of the highlights of the season.
