FRIDAY, JULY 27, 5 PM, FREE---Presented by Elvia Francisca González Martínez, Researcher at Welte Institute

Mtra. Gonzalez has an undergraduate degree in communication from the Huatulco campus of the Universidad del Mar and a Masters from the Universidad of the Sierra Sur, both in the state of Oaxaca. She is presently studying in a doctoral program in Anthropology and Indigenous populations. She is one of seven young Oaxacan artists and cultural promoters who formed Pochotle Yag Doo in 2009, a collective to support and preserve artisans work. Initially the group worked in the Central Valley of Oaxaca and now has expanded to small scale wood, bone carving and palm objects in Mihuatlan in the Sierra Sur.

Her talk will include a brief description of the cooperative effort, their workshops for young children in the area to keep the artisan traditions alive and a will feature a group of artisans from Mihuatlan who will give a demonstration and offer their carvings from sale as well as a small book on the work of the collective..

Estudió la licenciatura en Ciencias de la Comunicación en la Universidad del Mar, campus Huatulco y el posgrado en Gobierno Electrónico en la Universidad de la Sierra Sur, en Oaxaca, ambas universidades pertenecientes al Sistema de Universidades Estatales de Oaxaca (SUNEO). Actualmente cursa el Doctorado en Estudios Mesoamericanos, en el campo de conocimiento Antropología de los pueblos indígena. El colectivo busca difundir las producciones artísticas de los pueblos originarios desde su visión interna (religiosa, artística y socio-política). Esta difusión se genera bajo los principios de la participación, solidaridad, respeto por el entorno y por los demás. En este sentido, el colectivo se adapta y modela a sí mismo para contribuir con el desarrollo del arte, el cuidado de la naturaleza y la preservación de los idiomas de los pueblos originarios de Oaxaca.
