Natural Dye Explorations: Indigo Dye Party Description:
Indigo Dye Party
Tlayudona is collaborating with internationally-renowned dye artist and educator Claire Fredrick of Wax & Wane Fiber to bring us a different perspective on the dyeing process during this first event in our “Natural Dye Explorations” series. Claire is going to open up a multi-faceted dialogue about indigo dyeing history, culture, and techniques with us, and then we´re going to have a dye party.

Come and learn about the illustrious and enticing Indigo with Claire, in the beautiful Oaxacan campo. You’ll learn about the history, chemistry, and artistic uses of Indigofera tinctoria while also learning simple Japanese shibori techniques to make beautiful marks on fabric. This class will give you all the necessary information so that you can go home and begin your own indigo vat and natural dye artistic practice.

Fabric will be provided. Participants may bring one small item of your choice to dye in the vat after using the provided fabric.

We will provide water, tamales made by Doña Juana on-site, and “agua de sabor” to round out your experience in the open-air campo of Oaxaca.
