TALK: MAKING SILK IN OAXACA or How Artisans Turn Mulberry Leaves into Rebozos

Karren will talk about and demonstrate this most amazing process where the artisans of Teotitlan del Valle and San Pedro Cajono begin by planting and tending the mulberry orchards where they raise 20,000 silk worms twice a year. They harvest the cocoons and transform them in to silk yarn which they use to weave. The final textile is finished by dyeing with natural dyes, knotting the fringe or hand sewing the garment. Everything is done by the artisans using simple tools. All local materials gathered or made by artisans. There is no industrial processing or intervention in their process.
