Hard on the heels of the conquistadors came the primeros pobladores. Aside from government bureaucrats and clergy, most of these first settlers were second sons: small farmers, and small town shopkeepers from rural Extremadura and Andalucía. Although only a handful of them had any prior experience as miners, within forty years after the fall of Tenochtitlán, silver mining had become the most important and most lucrative industry in New Spain and had created a massive infrastructure of support.
How did this happen? Were there mines in Mexico prior to the Spaniards’ arrival? How did the new immigrants become miners? Where did they look? Who did the digging? What were the obstacles? How did they pry the silver loose from the minerals with which it was bound? How did discoveries in refining techniques, developed here in Mexico, revolutionize the world wide mining industry?
