TALK: CLIMATE ACTION in MEXICO
Presented by Larry Gussin

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2, 5 PM

MX$ 90 (M) MX$130 (NM)
This year's beyond-the-headlines look at our common struggle to mitigate climate change - a marathon, not a sprint - will profile Mexico and California.

Mexico has been a leading voice for climate action among developing nations. A former Foreign Minister, Patricia Espinosa, directs climate change efforts at the UN. In 2019, Mexico will begin a national emissions trading system (ETS) designed to half its greenhouse emissions by 2045; it is also committed to get half of its energy from renewable resources by then. And its first progressive president in decades is taking office in December - how will AMLO take the reins of Mexico's climate movement?

Closer to OLL, how across Oaxaca state is climate change, as well as renewable energy economic opportunities and social growing pains, being experienced today?

California is the world's 5th largest economy (UK and France, climate leaders too, are 6th and 7th). With its economic clout, California's new pledge to be 100% carbon neutral across its economy by 2045 (that is, to radically produce no net emissions in electricity, transportation, industry, buildings, and agriculture) will drive policy and clean energy advances beyond its border. California and Mexico, for instance, have begun to discuss integrating Mexico's ETS with California's much larger one.

Larry Gussin, formerly principle original investigator at Nest Labs, is a volunteer climate solutions activist with Sierra Club and Climate Reality Project. His Gussin Climate Action Fund is a donor-advised fund at The Sierra Club Foundation. This is his sixth visit to Oaxaca.
