You think travel today is a drag? Booking flights on the internet. Long lines at airports. Tight security. Packed in like sardines 6-abreast in tourist class. And of course those tasty, nutritious “snacks.” You don’t know how good you’ve got it!

Follow with David the journey in 1534 of an immigrant family from their village on the Portuguese-Spanish border to Mexico City. What sorts of transport were available to them? How did they find a vessel and secure passage? What was life on shipboard like? What did they eat, and how did they amuse themselves, and how did they deal with those inevitable bodily functions? Where did they stop, and why? What awaited them in San Juan de Ulúa, a short skiff and a jump from Veracruz? And the terrors, and the challenges, and the discomforts, and the marvels of the trek from the coastal sands to their half-built lodgings on the Calle Tacuba in the colonial capital! Whew!

David Gitlitz worked for a number of universities in the US, Latin America, and Europe as a professor (literature, history, anthropology) and an administrator (program director, department chair, dean, academic vice president). His writing, some of it in conjunction with his late wife Linda Davidson, has been on topics of Spanish culture and literature, pilgrimages and holy places, Spanish-Jewish interrelations, and Renaissance cuisine. His first trip to Oaxaca was in 1960 (!), and he's been living full time in Santa Cruz Etla now for five years and considers it his home for the duration./

Siga con David el viaje en 1534 de una familia inmigrante de su pueblo en la frontera portuguesa-española a la Ciudad de México. ¿Qué tipos de transporte estaban disponibles para ellos? ¿Cómo encontraron un barco y un pasaje seguro? ¿Cómo era la vida a bordo? ¿Qué comieron, cómo se divirtieron y cómo lidiaron con esas inevitables funciones corporales? ¿Dónde se detuvieron y por qué? ¿Qué les esperaba en San Juan de Ulúa, un breve bote y un salto desde Veracruz? ¡Y los terrores, y los desafíos, y las molestias, y las maravillas de la caminata desde las arenas costeras hasta sus alojamientos a medio construir en la calle Tacuba en la capital colonial! ¡Uf!

David Gitlitz trabajó para varias universidades en los Estados Unidos, América Latina y Europa como profesor (literatura, historia, antropología) y administrador (director del programa, jefe de departamento, decano, vicepresidente académico). Su escrito, en parte junto con su difunta esposa Linda Davidson, ha tratado temas de cultura y literatura española, peregrinaciones y lugares sagrados, interrelaciones hispano-judías y cocina renacentista. Su primer viaje a Oaxaca fue en 1960 (!), Y ha estado viviendo a tiempo completo en Santa Cruz Etla durante cinco años y lo considera su hogar durante todo el tiempo.
