TALK: REGIONAL OAXACAN MUSIC of Yesterday and Today

Cicely will talk about her recently published book, Regional Oaxacan Music of yesterday and today, transcribed for organ and piano. She will discuss the evolution of the folk repertoire from its simple village beginnings to the extravagant presentations in the Guelaguetza, as well as the legitimacy of playing this music in the churches.

This book, of transcriptions of Oaxaca’s well-known folk music, was inspired by the discovery that the historic pipe organs could sound like a wind band when playing the regional repertoire. This is not entirely surprising however, since the pipe organ is also a wind instrument, although by far the largest and most versatile, and its numerous pipes can produce sounds similar to those of flutes, trumpets, and trombones. The state of Oaxaca is the Mexican capital for both the historic organs and the wind bands, and the transcriptions in this book propose to link the two musical expressions.

The book and the CD on which the transcriptions are based will be available for purchase after the talk. Proceeds will support the work of the IOHIO (Institute of Oaxacan Historic Organs or IOHIO).
Cicely Winter has lived in Oaxaca since 1972. She is the director of the Instituto de Órganos Históricos de Oaxaca (Institute of Oaxacan Historic Organs or IOHIO), a non-profit organization founded in 2000 which is committed to the protection, conservation, and promotion of the 72 historic organs documented in the state of Oaxaca. She teaches organ to five young Oaxacans and may be heard frequently in organ concerts.
