Homage to the Virgin of Guadalupe by Mexican Textile Artists

Linda Hanna, a long-time member of the Lending Library and well-known collaborator with many of the local artisans in and around Oaxaca, has been working for over a year with other notable people to arrange a major gallery show featuring textile artists in fifty-two communities from eight different Mexican states.

The exhibit, called “Roses & Revelations”, interweaves textile art with the religious sensibilities of the Mexican people, using Our Lady of Guadalupe (the nation’s patroness) as a template. Just as the image of the Virgin Mother was imprinted on the rough cloak of a poor Indian, Juan Diego, in December of 1531, artists from around the country have incorporated imagery of the Virgin into various garments which will be on display in the exhibit.
