Description:
TALK: MEXICO, LAND of COMPLEX GEOLOGY, ACTIVE VOLCANOS, and DANGEROUS EARTHQUAKES
Presented by Ian M. Lange

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6, 5 PM, FREE

Mexico has a long, fascinating, geological history and several distinct terranes. Not only are there rocks 1.8 billion years old, but the Baja Peninsula began about 5 million years ago to separate from mainland Mexico creating the Gulf of Lower California. The 1250 km (775 mile) long peninsula is now part of southwestern California. It will form a long, skinny island, is moving northwestward via the San Andreas fault, and will ultimately attach to Alaska. Mexico, because of these and other factors to be discussed, is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, and has some of the world’s largest active volcanoes.
