Porfirio Gutiérrez and his family are masters of traditional Zapotec weaving and come from a long line of weavers in Teotitlán del Valle. He is among a small group of textile artisans working to preserve the use of plant and insect dyes, techniques that stretch back more than 1,000 years in the indigenous Zapotec tradition. Sr. Gutiérrez’ work has been featured at the Smithsonian and several articles about his endeavors have appeared in The New York Times.

Porfirio and his wife now live in California, but he will be visiting Oaxaca in March and has graciously agreed to give a presentation at the OLL the evening before one of the Library’s “Out & About In Oaxaca” tours visit Teotitlan the following day.
