Black Pottery/ Barro Negro
We’ve been out to visit Adelaida and her family’s black pottery spot a few times now, but this will be our first time getting our hands into the clay and making our own. Join us in the tactile of experience of making our own piece of art after seeing & hearing about this artistic and historical patrimony.

Our host, Adelaida
Adelaida is the daughter of one of San Bartolo’s most prominent black potters, and carries on his tradition with a feminine flare in her designs. At their studio, they make a range of artistic and craft/folkloric pieces that have become emblematic of their region, and even to Oaxaca in general.

We’ll dabble a bit into the history and cultural legacy of this art form, and then we’ll get our hands dirty. At Tlayudona, we´ve found that one of the most immediate consequences of participating “hands-on” in an experience is that it births a grand appreciation for the work and talent that goes into each creation, in this case, the black pottery.

The logistics:
Time frame: 12 p.m. to approximately 2 p.m.

Transportation: Optional.
You can purchase transportation with Tlayudona for 200 MXN per person using the button below, or you can utilize your own alternative transportation. Transportation MUST be reserved in advance, at the time of your reservation (so that we can arrange transportation according to our group size). Thank you in advance for your consideration.

*If you are planning to travel with Tlayudona, we will leave from Tlayudona (Hidalgo #100, Barrio Jalatlaco) at 11 a.m., so please be there by 10:45 a.m. We would return at approximately 3 p.m., depending on traffic.

Cost of Workshop: 750 MXN per person. (Transportation not included in this price.)
Discount: 700 MXN when you reserve spots for 2 or more people.

Important (!):
Because your pieces need to be fired in the traditional oven, you will not be able to take them at the end of the workshop. They will be delivered to Tlayudona for pick-up once they are fired. This could take a couple of days or up to 3 weeks depending on when the pieces are fired. Your piece can also be shipped to you internationally by Adelaida at an additional cost.

Hemos ido a visitar el sitio de alfarería negra de Adelaida y su familia unas cuantas veces, pero esta será la primera vez que metemos nuestras manos en la arcilla y hacemos las nuestras. Únase a nosotros en la experiencia táctil de hacer nuestra propia obra de arte después de ver y escuchar acerca de este patrimonio artístico e histórico.

Adelaida es hija de uno de los alfareros negros más prominentes de San Bartolo, y continúa su tradición con un toque femenino en sus diseños. En su estudio, hacen una variedad de piezas artísticas y artesanales / folklóricas que se han convertido en emblemáticas de su región, e incluso de Oaxaca en general.

Nos meteremos un poco en la historia y el legado cultural de esta forma de arte, y luego nos ensuciaremos las manos. En Tlayudona, encontramos que una de las consecuencias más inmediatas de participar de manera práctica en una experiencia es que genera una gran apreciación por el trabajo y el talento que cada creación, en este caso, la cerámica negra.

Importante (!):
Debido a que sus piezas deben ser cocidas en el horno tradicional, no podrá llevarlas al final del taller. Serán entregados a Tlayudona para que los recojan una vez que son despedidos. Esto podría tomar un par de días o hasta 3 semanas, dependiendo de cuándo se disparan las piezas. Su pieza también puede ser enviada a usted internacionalmente por Adelaida a un costo adicional.
