Day hike from Zegache to Ocotlan
Wednesday / 3 November 2021 at 11 am – Special “Day of the Dead” hike – Note Wednesday date & 11 o’clock start time
Time frame: 11:00 am to 6:00 pm / Distance: 6.0 miles (9.6 km) / Elevation change: very slight, with 257 feet (78 meters) of gain and 125 feet (38 meters) of loss along the route / Type: point to point / Trail: mostly dirt roads in the country and pavement in the city / Exposure: full sun / Rating: easy
On this hike through the countryside in the Zimatlan valley south of Oaxaca we will stop at the cemetery in San Antonino Castill Velasco to view the floral decorations and sand paintings local people have placed on the graves of their departed family members in honor of the Day of the Dead. Hikers can buy food and beverages for lunch from the vendors gathered on the perimeter of the cemetery.
NOTE: Because of the pandemic, cemetery may not be open to the public. This hike will take place regardless of the status of the cemetery.
PANDEMIC PROTOCOL: For everyone's safety, hike participants must show proof of vaccination when boarding the van the morning of the hike, and must wear face masks when traveling in the van. Masks may be removed when out on the trail. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
