Historically, the handing-down of community knowledge to younger generations was a collective responsibility and was reproduced through the everyday experiences of community life and work. The breakdown of this model began when organized formal schools burst into the life of traditional communities. Supported by the best intentions of the State to create a cohesive nation, this eruption, nevertheless, meant the gradual separation from the traditional way of life and how the original community members explained life and the world.
Hugo Miranda is from the pueblo of San Pablo Yaganiza in the Sierra Norte, he will speak about his experiences/observations/opinions on how state intervention impacted his community’s system of sharing traditional values.
