Description:
GUIDED TOUR: Special Guided Tour at Centro Fotográfico Álvarez Bravo
Guided by Martha Sorensen

MEET at the Centro Fotográfico Álvarez Bravo (CFMAB)
M. Alvarez Bravo 116, Centro

This tour introduces the current exhibitions at the Centro Fotografico by two nationally and internationally award-winning photographers from indigenous communities in the Sierras of Oaxaca, Baldomero Robles and Jorge Santiago. The theme of both exhibitions focuses on the influence of migration on the culture and daily life of the birthplace of each photographer. Robles’ loö litz beë (House of the Wind) portrays with insight and humor how his memories and dreams from childhood combine with recent outside influences to change his view of his traditional community of San Pedro Cajonos, Villa Alta. Jorge Santiago’s Identidad en Juego (Identity in Play) tells the story of how the basketball court in pueblos in the Sierra Norte became the focal point of community identity. Today, each March, some 2,000 players in 200 teams vie for the Benito Juarez Cup in Guelatao de Juarez, Santiago’s home town.

Martha Sorensen is a current resident of Oaxaca. Recently, she completed a second year in the Coleccion en Vivo curatorial program at the Centro Fotografico. Previously, she was a faculty member at Santa Fe Community College (NM) and has been involved in the arts from writing film reviews for a newspaper to serving as a founding board member of a community theater company.
