Rodrigo will speak on the challenges of speaking Mixe in a dominantly Spanish-language culture. His personal experiences of leaving his village and attempting to establish himself outside of his community. Though things have improved somewhat over the years, indigenous peoples continue to experience racism and class prejudice when speaking their native languages in the larger urban (and Spanish-speaking) environment. He will also address the distinction between language and dialects.
