TALK: INTRODUCTION TO MEZCAL

Mezcal is an important part of Oaxacan culture, economy, and environment. This talk will introduce novice drinkers, and those who are simply curious about the subject, to the world of Mezcal in Oaxaca: its mythical origins and the archeological evidence, the variety of agaves and production methods that produce different flavors, its cultural context and economic significance. Samples of Mezcal Espadin, Tobala and Madre Cuishe will be presented to help educate the palate.

Since 2007, Ron Grant has traveled from Tequila, Jalisco to Merida, Yucatan learning about Mexican liquors. In 2014 he attended classes and tastings provided by Guillermo Sauza and the educational staff at Destileria la Fortaleza. Ron has worked with COMERCAM (Consejo Mexicano Regulador de la Calidad del Mezcal A.C.) and other promoters of Mexican liquors to develop educational tastings. He and his wife hosted several such events in the Seattle area before moving to Oaxaca about 4 years ago. He visits every palenque that he can and samples every agave drink given to him. Ron is also helping a Oaxacan family-owned palenque, located between Mitla and San Juan del Rio, to grow its market share locally and prepare for export internationally.
