Out & About: CULTURAL HERITAGE FERIA in SAN JUAN TEITIPAC
Celebrating the Zapotec Language and Culture
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 8 AM - 4 PM
MX$350 (M) MX$400 (NM)
In February of 2018 the people of San Juan Teitipac, 28 kilometers east of Oaxaca in the Tlacolula valley, set up the first-ever feria celebrating their Zapotec language and culture. The event, which began as a project of the grade school children, was a huge success. The community is hosting it's second such feria on Thursday, 21 February 2019. It is a day-long event that will celebrate the people’s Zapotec language and feature the music and dance, the food and crafts that are so much a part of their daily lives.
OLL’s “Out & About In Oaxaca” program will support this effort by local indigenous people to keep their heritage alive. We will have two Sprinter vans available to take people to San Juan to join in the feria. The Library group will arrive early and be greeted by fair officials who will brief us on village history and culture.
As the day progresses, we will experience:
a parade,
music,
dance,native costumes,
a children’s theater performance,
delicious traditional foods sold by local vendors,
crafts of local artisans,
a visit the third oldest church in Oaxaca.
